Splatoon 2 costume / Making the t-shirt

Halloween is coming soon and my son decided to dress in a Splatoon 2 character. Last week I worked hard to make the tentacles (hair). This week, it will be the t-shirt.

I have a lot of ambition for this costume (as usual, I tend to do a little too much!). My plans for this costume are:

The t-shirt

This week, the t-shirt! Here’s our little character that serves as inspiration:

Required materials for the Splatoon t-shirt

At the time, I used my Silhouette to cut a stencil. Now I would use my Cricut, download an image from the Internet (make sure you know about copyright on images here) and use HTV (Heat transfer vinyl). The result would have been way better!!!

But if you don’t have a cutting machine, you might want to use the painting technique so here it is:

Painting

Once the stencil is cut, I used it to trace the outline with a white marking pencil.

I then applied the Pebeo Setacolor paint. I have to confess that I started this by using the  Fabric medium (GAC-900)  that had always worked well for me before. But, for a dark fabric, it was way too translucent. The Pebeo opaque Setacolor made a much better result.

I applied two coats for a more uniform colour. For the small letters at the bottom, I used the template as a stencil and then I went over with a small brush.

You can see in this photo that I had inserted a plastic box inside the shirt in case the painting would go through. I didn’t want to also paint the back of the sweater !! And I was glad I did because the paint actually passed through!

Ironing

The Pebeo website recommends ironing the fabric upside down for 5 minutes at “Cotton” position without steam to fix the colour.

And It’s done, a nice Splatoon 2 t-shirt!
